This nonprofit seeks to restore, preserve, and maintain green spaces that Frederick Law Olmsted designed and which now comprise the city’s major park system. Spanning 1,100 acres, these Boston landmarks include Franklin Park, Olmsted Park, and the Arnold Arboretum.

One current project centers on Charlesgate Park, which inhabits a location on Back Bay where the Kenmore and Fenway neighborhoods converge. Olmsted envisioned this as a critical link that would enable visitors to traverse the Emerald Necklace to Commonwealth Avenue Mall and the Charles River Esplanade. Unfortunately, this original concept has been neglected in recent decades.

Over the years, road construction became the priority for this space, with a highway overpass, on-ramps, and roads diminishing and polluting the Muddy River waterway. In the works since 2017, the current revitalization plan includes the creation of wetlands and rain gardens that will help rehabilitate the Muddy River. In addition, a children’s play area and a large-scale dog park will be constructed.

With the regional pathway network restored, cyclists and pedestrians will also be able to freely traverse an extended distance, from Boston’s North Station to Watertown, without encountering significant traffic. The proposed project plan is expected to be “shovel ready” by late 2022.
